Who is in Your Boat? Navigating Life's Storms with Faith

Who is in your boat? In other words, who is in your world? Life can get overwhelming, and stress often builds as we juggle work, care for family, friends, and ourselves. On top of it all, we have our church life to consider. But from time to time, it's wise to pause and reflect on who is in your boat.

This is exactly what the disciples did when they were tossed around by a "furious" storm on the sea. In Matthew 8:23-27, we read: "The disciples went and woke Him, saying, 'Lord, save us! We're going to drown.'"

There are several key lessons in this event that can help us navigate life's challenges, especially when we face storms.

1. The Disciples Knew Where to Turn for Help – Jesus

The disciples had learned where to go for help – to Jesus. As Christians, no matter what we’re facing, Jesus is always present. In times of struggle, we must remember to turn to Him for support, guidance, and strength.

2. The Disciples Had Faith in Jesus’ Ability to Help

The disciples had faith in Jesus’ ability to save them. They had been growing in their relationship with Him, learning and maturing. Though they still had much to learn (just like us), their faith in His power was growing stronger with each experience.

3. The Disciples Were Amazed by Jesus’ Power to Calm the Storm

The disciples were once again amazed at Jesus’ ability to calm the storm. Staying calm during life’s storms can be challenging. We often want to fix things immediately, continue with our plans, and check off our to-do lists. But when the waves are raging, and life feels out of control, we struggle. However, as we turn to Jesus and trust in His power, we too will be amazed by His ability to bring peace into our lives.

Trusting Jesus with Our Lives

As Jesus hung on the cross, about to breathe His last breath, He said, "Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit" (Luke 23:46). In the midst of life's storms, it's crucial to remember that we are never alone in the boat. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is to surrender fully to Him: "Lord Jesus, into Your hands I commit my life." When we do this, we allow Him to work in us and through us, according to His will.
