Marriage, Faith, and Fun: The Surprising Lessons from Playing Card Games

The Joy of Simple Card Games and Maintaining Unity in Marriage

From time to time, my wife and I turn off our computers, iPads, and TV. We even close our Bibles and books for a while to play a simple card game. We've been playing cards for years, and at one point, we even created a quirky reward for the winner: a single dried black-eyed pea! Yes, you read that right—a single dried black-eyed pea. The winner would hold the prize with a mix of pride and laughter, while the loser would pout briefly before we both moved on.

There were no hard feelings. After a moment or two, we'd pack up the cards, get up from the table, and continue with our evening as usual. There was no lingering anger or resentment. Our love for each other remained unchanged, and when we sat down for the next game, we'd often joke about who had won last time. Playful trash talk became part of the fun, but it was all in good spirits.

The Importance of Unity and Peace in Christian Relationships

As Christians, we don’t always agree on every issue. We all have different perspectives on the challenges we face in society. While there are times when it’s necessary to discuss and share our thoughts, it's important to remember that our differing views should never destroy or hinder our relationship with God or each other.

The Bible offers guidance on this matter. In Titus 3:9, we are instructed to avoid "foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments, and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." Later in Titus 3:14, we read, "...people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives."

The Value of Simple Moments and Productive Living

While winning a dried black-eyed pea in a card game might seem trivial, it’s a reminder of the joy that can be found in simple, shared moments. The value lies not in the prize, but in spending quality time together. What truly matters is that, after the game, we get up from our chairs and continue doing the productive tasks necessary for everyday life—helping others, fulfilling responsibilities, and making a positive impact in the world.

In the same way, when we maintain unity in our relationships and focus on doing good, we all become winners. Whether it’s in marriage or our broader Christian community, we thrive when we avoid needless arguments, embrace understanding, and prioritize love and service.
