You Are Never Alone: A Reflection on God's Presence
The house was quiet. My wife had left for work, and I was all alone—or at least, I thought I was. Suddenly, I heard scratching, followed by a thump. Filled with curiosity, I began a quick walkthrough of our small home. It didn’t take long to realize I was not alone.
A robin, with its vibrant red chest, was pecking at the glass door. From time to time, it flew straight into it, creating a dull thud. The bird, seemingly captivated by its own reflection in the patio doors, continued its relentless pursuit. This wasn’t the first time we had encountered such visitors. Birds had pecked and bumped against our glass doors before—some even knocking themselves unconscious, and on a few occasions, tragically losing their lives.
At that moment, I was reminded of a powerful truth: I am never truly alone, for I am a child of the living God.
God’s Presence in Every Moment
Psalm 139:7-12 beautifully reassures us of God's unwavering presence:
"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,’
Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You."
This passage is a reminder that no matter where we are—whether in moments of joy, sorrow, uncertainty, or even isolation—God is with us.
Loneliness and God’s Comfort
After being married for over 43 years, I cannot fully imagine life without my wife. I assume it would be a difficult adjustment, one that many have had to face. Loneliness is real, but God does not want us to feel alone.
From Daniel in the lions’ den to Jonah in the belly of the great fish, God’s presence never wavered. He wanted them to be aware of His nearness, just as He wants us to recognize Him in our own lives today.
Perhaps you aren’t in a den of lions or the belly of a fish, but you might be surrounded by people and still feel isolated. If you’re struggling with loneliness, hold on to this promise from Isaiah 41:10:
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
No matter where life takes you, you are never alone. God is always with you, offering strength, guidance, and love.
