The Power of Reminders: A Picture, a Bible, and a Lifelong Journey

Sitting just inches away on my small desk are cherished pictures of my wife. One of them is particularly special—it’s the very first picture she gave me in the spring of 1981, over 44 years ago. That photograph is more than just an image; it’s a tangible reminder of the beautiful journey we began together so many years ago.

On the other side of my desk rests my Bible, which I try to open and use daily. Like the picture of my wife, it serves as a powerful reminder—this time of the journey I began with Jesus Christ. Both the photo and the Bible anchor me to the two most important relationships in my life: my wife and my Savior.

We all need reminders in life.

Deuteronomy 6:6–8 says,
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads."

Although this passage comes from the Old Testament, we now live under the new covenant, established through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As Luke 22:20 reminds us:
"In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'"

From time to time, I need to pause and look at that photo of my wife to remember the blessing she is in my life. Likewise, I need to open my Bible—even if just for a few verses—to be reminded of the incredible blessings I have through Jesus Christ: forgiveness, love, and redemption by the very Son of God.

Never let dust gather on the pictures of your loved ones. And never let your Bible remain closed. Keep the memories alive, and keep the Word of God active in your heart.
