Sunday Reflections: Reconnecting with God

It frustrates me when, during a major political campaign season, I am inundated with phone calls, texts, emails, and commercials throughout my day. Even Sunday is no longer sacred to politicians and their agendas.

I recall a time in my childhood when we set aside Sundays and Wednesday evenings to focus on God and His Church. Teachers were considerate about assigning homework on Wednesday evenings, as it was widely recognized as Church night. Now, we are overwhelmed with various activities on Wednesdays and even Sunday mornings, and then we wonder why it seems our world is falling apart.

I believe we have strayed from God, His will, and His ways. We have become overly focused on accumulating possessions that ultimately rust, break, and fall apart. Even if we are not preoccupied with material goods, we often fill our lives with trips and sightseeing adventures, leaving little time for meditation on the everlasting God. As Matthew 6:19-21 states: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I recognize my own guilt in this matter, and I pray tonight that I will stop allowing other distractions to consume me to the point of hindering my relationship with God.
