Reducing Temptation: How Christians Can Stay Focused on a Pure and Holy Life
It’s often said that "practice makes perfect." If that’s true, perhaps Christians should focus on practicing ways to reduce the temptations that constantly bombard our lives. In today’s world, where evil distractions seem to be ever-present, it’s crucial for believers to actively work on avoiding those pitfalls and staying focused on a pure, holy life.
Avoiding Distractions in a Tempting World
Our society is filled with distractions that can pull us away from our walk with Christ. Social media, for example, can be a major source of temptation, offering constant updates and distractions. Instead of mindlessly scrolling, Christians could benefit from spending more time in prayer, meditation, and studying God’s Word. By prioritizing time with God, we strengthen our relationship with Him and develop the strength to resist temptation.
Another important shift could be spending less time with non-believers and more time in fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ. While it’s true that Jesus Himself spent time among the lost and unbelieving, He did not immerse Himself in their lifestyle. Jesus withdrew often to spend time alone with God or in the company of His disciples. One such instance is recorded in Mark 9:31-32:
"Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, ‘Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place."
The Power of Practice and the Holy Spirit
Just like a musician doesn’t become an expert overnight, Christians don’t instantly overcome temptation. It takes time, effort, and consistent practice. But through a heart committed to change and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome the grip of temptation. With practice, prayer, and desire, we can grow in holiness and walk closer to Christ every day.
