The Sweetness of God's Word: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Preaching on the Sunday before Thanksgiving can be a bit of a challenge. Due to the size of our church building, we often have to utilize the sanctuary for several purposes. On this particular Sunday, we always enjoy a traditional potluck meal following the morning worship service. People bring all sorts of sweet desserts, and the excitement in the air is palpable.

One of the unique traditions is turning our baptismal watering trough upside down and using it as a table for desserts. The trough, covered with a cloth, sits next to the pulpit, and it quickly fills with an array of homemade chocolate pies, cobblers, cookies, cakes, and more. It's a sight to behold. And as I stand to preach, I have the wonderful challenge of speaking while everyone’s eyes are on those delicious treats, waiting eagerly for the moment they can enjoy them.

This scene reminds me of a verse from Psalm 119:103, where the Psalmist declares, "How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Indeed, the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are like the sweetest of desserts—waiting to be savored and enjoyed by all who seek them. As we sit around our Thanksgiving tables this year, let us remember to give thanks not only for the abundance we have but also for the richness of God's Word.

In Hebrews 4:12, we read: "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." What a blessing we have in the Word of God! It’s not just a book to be read; it’s a living, powerful tool for transformation.

As we reflect on all the sweet blessings in our lives this Thanksgiving, may we all fall deeper in love with God’s Word and allow it to shape our hearts and lives.
