Chips and Choices: Navigating Sin and Redemption

While driving down the road, a small rock flew up and chipped the windshield within seconds. Although this may be a common occurrence for some, it is clearly aggravating for most. We are all aware that a small chip will not hinder our vision or stop us from driving for some time. However, we also know that if the chip is left unattended, it can eventually develop into a crack. Without much warning, this crack may spread—sometimes slowly, while at other times it can quickly engulf the entire windshield.

A chip in the windshield is akin to cancer. It may remain dormant and seemingly insignificant for a long time, or it may spread rapidly and uncontrollably, leading to significant problems for the individual affected. Similarly, a chip can be compared to an unchecked sin, which can spread and impact one’s entire being in an instant, ultimately hindering one’s relationship with God.

Jesus was tempted to sin, just like each of us; however, the Scriptures are clear that He did not succumb to sin. Hebrews 4:15 states, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin." We often stray off course on our journey; we make poor choices, and at times we knowingly act against the holy desires of our God. As a result, our lives become "chipped" by the effects of sin.

The best response upon realizing the "chip" (sin) in the windshield of our lives is to pause, share our hearts with the forgiving Lord, and seek not only forgiveness but also the strength to resist the temptation to repeat the sin in the future. We must then trust Him and move forward. We should remember 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Chips will inevitably occur, just as sin will always exist. However, as the Holy Spirit makes us aware of these issues, we will find it much easier to address them promptly. In doing so, everyone—including God—can relax and enjoy the blessings that surround us.
