Walking in the Spirit: A Christian’s Guide to Living a Clean Life
Vacations are always fun, but they never seem long enough. Whether it's a break from work or a chance to explore new destinations, vacations provide an opportunity for rest and adventure. Some vacations are spent relaxing at home, while others are dedicated to traveling and sightseeing. Regardless of where you go, one thing is certain: you’ll need to eat.
During one memorable vacation in Montevideo, Uruguay, my wife, two daughters, and I visited a wonderful restaurant. After enjoying our meal, the waiter began to clear the table before dessert was served. Now, when I say he cleaned the table, I mean he really cleaned it. The waiter removed everything from the table—except for the tablecloth—and then brought out a small, handheld vacuum cleaner. He ran the vacuum across the tablecloth, sucking up every tiny crumb. We were all amazed and had a great time watching the little vacuum meticulously clean the table.
This experience made me reflect on how we, as Christians, are called to have clean lives, no matter where we are. David’s prayer in Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” This is a prayer that should be on the heart of every believer. However, living a clean life isn’t a one-time event; it’s a continuous process. As Galatians 5:16 reminds us, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Just as walking is a daily necessity, striving to live a clean life is a daily pursuit. It's like the act of vacuuming—a daily effort to maintain purity in our hearts and actions, regardless of where we are or what we're doing. By walking in the Spirit and seeking God’s guidance, we can ensure that our lives remain free from the clutter of sin and distraction.
